What Is Macular Dystrophy?

Macular dystrophy is a common age-related condition where the retina and macula begin to deteriorate. Although it is most common in older individuals, early onset can be caused by smoking or genetics.

The Early Signs

Have you ever accidentally looked into the sun a little too long? You may remember black dots forming in your vision for a while. This is also a symptom of macular dystrophy. If you wake up in the morning and begin to see black dots in your vision, be sure to seek proper eye care.

The objects in front of you appear to have vanished entirely. Your eyes may be playing tricks on you because the object, in most cases, is still in the same spot. Your vision will begin to lose track of objects directly in front of you. If you start to experience this then please seek advice from one of our optometrists.

Many people feel a small amount of sensitivity to light, but if you begin to experience headaches or eye aches from the glare, then it is time to visit an eye doctor.
